The First of Our Kind—MTS Pioneers Adventure!
When we began pioneering adventures in 1969—later coined the “unofficial birthday” of the U.S. adventure travel industry by Outside magazine—we never dreamed our own passion for adventure would be so contagious. Our pioneering spirit is still the stuff of legend. As a company of “firsts” and tireless explorers, we’re always looking for the Next Great Place, and we invite you to share in the discovery with us!

Our Heritage
Mountain Travel began with the belief that there is a little bit of adventure in everyone. The early days were fueled by the passions of outdoor enthusiasts who loved exploring wild places. 40 years later, we offer almost 200 adventures to destinations worldwide.

40th Anniversary Trips
Uncommon Journeys Inspired by Uncommon Leaders
2009 marks the 40 year anniversary of Mountain Travel Sobek, and for the occasion, we’re offering 40 new trips, more than 20 of which are uncommon anniversary adventures, including many led by our most popular trip leaders.

“A different kind of travel organization, Mountain Travel (USA) has been established through the combined interests of mountaineers—explorers Barry Bishop, Leo Le Bon, and Allen Steck—all members of the American Alpine Club, Sierra Club, and other organizations, for the purpose of creating backcountry wilderness trips where foot travel is the only means of access. Emphasis is on genuine exploration of the many remote areas of our planet that fortunately have not yet been touched by modern civilization or commercial development. Many of these wild and beautiful places need protection, which can only be accomplished through awareness by enlightened citizens.”
